CUMTD #4506, the first bus in the new red and white scheme (same colors as the Canadian flag), at the Market Place Mall in October, 1975. Photograph taken by A.J. Reinschmidt.
In the 1970s, a new manager came to the MTD from Toronto Transit. He felt that the radial, color coded, route structure was not appropriate and proposed a "grid" system of routes. To replace the color coding, a red and white paint scheme (same color red and white as the Canadian Flag). The grid system was such a failure that the previous route structure was resumed and the color coding of the routes reused, the the red and white colors remained in use.
